چکیده
I thankLockner et al. [this issue], hereafter referred to as LBS, for their interest in this work. LBS suggest that I [Marone, 1995] misunderstood their analysis and that their proposed empirical relation is indeed valid. I do not agree. I do not deny that LBS have established some form of empirical relationship, only the specific form of the relation and its theoretical basis are at issue. There are two basic problems with the LBS analysis: 1) they suggest hat an empirical relation has been established between the coefficient of internal friction of intact rock gi and the coefficient of friction of fault gouge g,, yet their analysis does not involve gi, but rather another parameter, and 2) the transformation rule used to derive their empirical relation is not valid for the parameters and data sets they use. Because of their potential significance for the failure criteria of tectonic faults it is important to evaluate carefully the issues under discussion.

Fault zone strength and failure criteria
This paper discusses Coulomb failure criteria for brittle deformation of intact rock and fault gouge. Data are presented from laboratory experiments designed to identify the critical gouge layer thickness required to effect a transition from the standard Coulomb criterion to a modified failure law (referred to as Coulomb plasticity) appropriate for simple shear of a gouge layer. Experiments wer...
متن کاملNew empirical failure criterion for shale
A new failure criterion was presented to predict the ultimate strength of shale under the triaxial and polyaxial state of stress. A database containing 93 datasets was obtained from the results of the uniaxial, triaxial, polyaxial compressive tests, an indirect tensile test was collected from reliable references, and this test was carried out on the shale samples taken from the southwestern oil...

In their paper, Nikogosian and Kickbusch show how the effects of the adoption by the World Health Organization (WHO) of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and its first Protocol extend beyond tobacco control and contribute to public health governance more broadly, by revealing new processes, institutions and instruments. While there are certainly good reasons to be optimisti...
متن کاملRadically Questioning the Principle of the Least Restrictive Alternative: A Reply to Nir Eyal; Comment on “Nudging by Shaming, Shaming by Nudging”
In his insightful editorial, Nir Eyal explores the connections between nudging and shaming. One upshot of his argument is that we should question the principle of the least restrictive alternative in public health and health policy. In this commentary, I maintain that Eyal’s argument undermines only a rather implausible version of the principle of the least restrictive alternative and I sketch ...

[1] Fault zone structure and properties may contain important information about past earthquake rupture and subsequent healing processes. Damaged fault zones are observed geologically in the field [e.g., Chester and Chester, 1998; Ben-Zion and Sammis, 2003]. Seismic studies have revealed the existence of low-velocity fault zones around active faults [e.g., Li et al., 1998; Ben-Zion et al., 2003...
